AFRICA'S CONCERNS ARE THE WORLD BANK'S PRIORITIES

Africa today shows much promise—stronger economic growth, committed leadership—but still needs support to overcome the challenges ahead. The World Bank provides resources, shares knowledge and builds local capacity within countries so that Africa can meet its development goals.

In addition to providing debt relief for the poorest countries, we are tackling the HIV/AIDS pandemic, assisting countries in recovering from conflict, raising education levels and spurring private sector development that will benefit everyone. We collaborate with African countries, building on the vision articulated by the African Union and the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD). As the chair of the regional aid coordination forum—Strategic Partnership for Africa—we work with donors to ensure development resources are used well and urge rich countries to cut farm subsidies and open their markets so that African products can compete globally.

Today, with offices in 29 countries, 50% of Bank staff who work with Africa live in the countries in which the projects are located.
