Coal mining is one of Poland’s largest industries, but its large work force and economic losses are a drag on the country’s economy. The World Bank has helped downsize the industry, plan for its privatization, improve the management of coal companies, and provide retraining and financial assistance to those who have lost their jobs. The focus now is on putting coal mining on a sound financial footing.
