When two earthquakes hit in August and November 1999, Turkey’s heartland was extensively damaged. Over 17,000 lives were lost, and an estimated 200,000 people were left homeless. World Bank projects are helping with both short term reconstruction and the long term goal of preparedness for potential disasters in the future.
