A strong civil society is critical to the transition from central planning to a market economy. A number of projects supported by the World Bank in Uzbekistan are designed and implemented with the active participation
of local communities. Also, every year, a
number of organizations benefit from financial assistance from the World Bank’s Small Grants Program. Over the past 7 years, 30 grants have been disbursed to organizations fostering civic engagement and working with disabled children and other groups in need.
